Cole 1st to 10 wins as Pirates edge Phillies
Jun 14, 2015 - 1:35 AM Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Gerrit Cole threw six solid innings and became the majors' first 10-game winner as the Pittsburgh Pirates held on to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 at PNC Park on Saturday.Cole (10-2) gave up two runs -- one earned -- on five hits and didn't walk a batter while striking out seven. The right-hander retired the final nine batters he faced and left with his club up 4-2.
After stranding a runner at second in the seventh, the Phillies opened the eighth with three straight hits off reliever Tony Watson. Ben Revere doubled and scored on a pinch-hit single by Jeff Francoeur.
Chase Utley followed with a single to end an 0-for-24 slump and Ryan Howard, who struck out three times against Cole, walked to load the bases.
"Things got a little crazy there," Watson said. "I just tried to stay composed, make my pitches and get us out of there."
Watson was able to escape with the lead intact thanks to two force outs at the plate and a groundout to second.
"It really came down to the eighth inning," said Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg. "Put ourselves in a good situation, not only to tie, but possibly win."
Mark Melancon tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his 20th save of the season.
Andrew McCutchen collected two RBI and Starling Marte had three hits and knocked in a run for the Pirates, who have won 17 of their last 24 games.
Revere picked up three hits and scored two runs for Philadelphia, which was 1- for-13 with runners in scoring position.
The Phillies have dropped nine straight on the road for the first time since an 11-game slide from July 20-Aug. 11, 2013.
After leading off the game with a single, Revere stole second and then took third on a throwing error by catcher Chris Stewart. Revere eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Utley.
The Pirates responded with two runs in the bottom of the first against Phillies starter Sean O'Sullivan (1-5).
With men on the corners and no outs, McCutchen hit a bouncer to third baseman Maikel Franco, whose throw home was dropped by catcher Carlos Ruiz as he tried to apply a tag on Gregory Polanco.
Polanco led off with a single, swiped second and went to third when Marte reached on a fielder's choice. Josh Harrison hit a two-out single to score Marte for a 2-1 lead.
Pittsburgh scored two more runs in the second on infield hits by Marte and McCutchen -- both with two outs.
Franco doubled off Cole to begin the fourth and came around to score on consecutive groundouts by Cody Asche and Freddy Galvis.
Polanco was thrown out by Asche trying to score on Marte's single to left field in the bottom of the inning. O'Sullivan then walked McCutchen and Neil Walker to load the bases with two outs, but he got out of the jam when Harrison grounded out to third.
Game Notes
McCutchen picked up his 500th career RBI in the first ... Franco extended his hitting streak to 11 games ... O'Sullivan gave up four runs on eight hits and walked four in six innings ... Following the game, the Phillies optioned outfielder/first baseman Darin Ruf to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Outfielder Domonic Brown will be called up from the IronPigs on Sunday.
