Gee gets spot start as Mets conclude set with Braves

Jun 14, 2015 - 12:21 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Dillon Gee returns from the bereavement list to make a spot start for the New York Mets Sunday afternoon in the rubber match of a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves.

Gee's first six appearances of 2015 were in a starting role, but he was moved to the bullpen for his most recent outing, June 9 against San Francisco. The 29-year-old right-hander's last start came June 3 versus San Diego. In that contest, he had his streak of 51 straight starts of five innings or more, the longest streak in franchise history, broken. He returned from a groin injury which cost him a month, but was tagged for seven runs -- four earned -- on eight hits over four-plus frames.

Gee has gone a career-high eight straight starts without recording a win. He's 0-4 in his previous eight starts going back to last season's Sept. 12 win versus Washington. In 16 games against Atlanta, Gee is 6-5 with a 3.09 ERA.

Mike Foltynewicz, who the Braves acquired in the offseason trade that sent Evan Gattis to Houston, toes the rubber for Atlanta. The 23-year-old right- hander is 0-1 over his last three appearances. He gave up 12 hits and five runs in 5 2/3 innings of a no-decision against San Diego on Tuesday. He's pitched once against the Mets. That came Sept. 28 last season when he allowed three hits and three runs in 2 1/3 innings.

On Saturday, Cameron Maybin delivered a two-run single in the 11th inning to lift the Braves to a 5-3 win. Maybin's hit off Carlos Torres came after the Braves tied the score with a two-run rally in the top of the ninth inning, capped by Freddie Freeman's RBI single.

Freeman hit a solo homer earlier in the game for Atlanta, which bounced back from a 5-3 loss on Friday to stop a five-game skid against the Mets.

"It's just fun to win more than anything, especially against these guys," said Maybin. "They've been playing well against us. We feel like we let them off the hook a few times this year."

Mets righty Jacob deGrom had nine strikeouts in seven innings and was in line for the win after allowing one run on five hits.

"It's hard (to lose) when you get a well-pitched game, but we'll pick ourselves up and move on," said Mets manager Terry Collins.

The Mets swept a three-game set over the Braves at home from April 21-23 and are 5-3 against them this season.
