Nats' Scherzer flirts with perfect game, shuts out Brewers

Jun 14, 2015 - 11:51 PM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Max Scherzer flirted with a perfect game and ended with a one-hit shutout in the Washington Nationals' 4-0 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday.

Scherzer (7-5) allowed a hit to Carlos Gomez leading off the seventh inning, spoiling his attempt at a perfect game. Gomez hit a blooper to shallow right field that fell just beyond the reach of second baseman Anthony Rendon.

"Every at-bat you stand at the plate, you see him throwing a pitch consistently, throwing the ball where the catcher wanted the ball," Gomez said.

Scherzer, the 2013 AL Cy Young Award winner, also walked Scooter Gennett with one out in the eighth.

The right-hander struck out a team-record 16 and threw 86 of his 119 pitches for strikes en route to his second career shutout. Scherzer avoided losing three straight starts for the first time since 2010, when he pitched for the Tigers.

"I was able to execute every pitch for the most part where I wanted to," Scherzer said.

Jordan Zimmermann threw the only no-hitter in Washington Nationals history on Sept. 28, 2014, in a 1-0 win over the Miami Marlins. Montreal Expos right- hander Dennis Martinez threw the only perfect game in franchise history against the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 28, 1991.

Milwaukee starter Taylor Jungmann (1-1) made his second major league start and gave up two runs on seven hits over five innings.

The Nationals broke a scoreless tie in the third. Denard Span singled, stole second, moved to third on Danny Espinosa's single and crossed the plate on Rendon's sacrifice fly.

Washington scored another run in the fourth. Clint Robinson singled, advanced to second and third on a pair of wild pitches and raced home on Jose Lobaton's single. The Nationals left the bases loaded later in the inning.

The visitors tacked on two more runs off Jeremy Jeffress in the seventh. Rendon and Yunel Escobar hit consecutive two-out singles, and both runners scored on Robinson's double.

Game Notes

Scherzer set a career high for strikeouts and broke the Washington mark of 14 set by Stephen Strasburg in his big league debut in 2010 ... Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper sat out Sunday after taking a fastball to his knee late in Saturday's game ... The Nationals acquired infielder Trea Turner from the San Diego Padres on Sunday, completing the Dec. 18, 2014 three-team trade that also involved the Rays.
