Giants hope to end slump vs. Mariners

Jun 15, 2015 - 2:32 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants try to prevent themselves from digging a bigger hole in the NL West Monday, when they play the first of four straight games versus the Seattle Mariners.

The last two installments of this matchup will be played at Safeco Field.

San Francisco was swept in three games by the Arizona Diamondbacks this weekend and has dropped four in a row and 10 of the last 14 games. In a 4-0 setback on Sunday at AT&T Park, D-backs starter Rubby De La Rosa kept the Giants off the board in eight innings of work and struck out six.

Chris Heston countered De La Rosa and was reached for three runs -- two earned -- and seven hits in five innings. Brandon Crawford had two of San Francisco's eight hits.

"This was one of the ugliest games," San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said. "We're going to have to tighten things up here."

The Giants dropped to 3 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for the NL West lead.

Hoping to pitch San Francisco back to life Monday will be veteran right-hander Tim Hudson. Hudson has alternated results in his last five starts and defeated the New York Mets on the road Wednesday with an 8-5 victory, charged with four runs and eight hits in five innings.

Hudson is 4-5 with a 4.60 earned run average in 12 starts this season and has faced Seattle plenty of times in his career from his days with Oakland. In 24 starts against the Mariners, Hudson is 13-6 with two complete games and a 3.17 ERA over 161 2/3 innings.

The Mariners dropped two of three games against the Houston Astros this weekend and sustained an embarrassing 13-0 defeat on Sunday. The Astros had a 14-2 advantage in hits and hammered Roenis Elias to the tune of eight runs (7 earned) and seven hits in 3 1/3 innings.

Austin Jackson produced a double and Kyle Seager had the other hit in the loss, Seattle's 11th in the past 15 contests.

"You have two options. You can either hang your head and feel sorry for yourself. Or you can get back to work and keep grinding," Seager said.

Taijuan Walker draws the start for the Mariners Monday and is 3-6 with a 5.40 ERA through 12 appearances. Walker has won two of his last three starts and fired six innings of one-run ball in a 9-3 rout at Cleveland on Wednesday. He has allowed four runs in his last three outings.

Walker has never faced San Francisco and the right-hander is 2-4 with an 8.27 ERA in seven road starts this season.

Seattle took two of three meetings with San Francisco in 2012 and has won 11 of the past 14 games in this series.
