Athletics turn to Hahn against Padres

Jun 15, 2015 - 2:37 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Oakland Athletics and San Diego Padres tangle Monday night at Petco Park in the first of four straight meetings.

The last two games of this matchup will take place at the Coliseum.

Oakland has won three of its last five games following a four-game skid and salvaged the finale of a three-game series against the rival L.A. Angels of Anaheim with Sunday's 8-1 victory.

Sonny Gray improved to 8-3 this season and allowed one unearned run and five hits over 7 2/3 innings. He struck out nine and did not issue a walk.

"He's an ace," said A's catcher Stephen Vogt. "I know he's young and he hasn't been around long enough to put him in that category yet, but you have to this year. He's one of the best pitchers in baseball right now and it's fun to catch him."

Jesse Hahn gets the nod for the A's Monday and is 3-5 with a 3.84 ERA in 12 starts. Hahn is 2-1 in his last three decisions and did not factor in the outcome of a 5-4 win versus Texas on Wednesday, allowing four runs and seven hits in a season-low 3 2/3 innings.

Hahn has never faced San Diego, his former club, and is 2-3 with a 4.40 ERA in five road assignments this season. Hahn went 7-4 with a 3.07 ERA in 14 games (12 starts) with the Friars last season.

The Padres lost two of three meetings with the rival Los Angeles Dodgers this weekend and were handed a 4-2 defeat in 12 innings on Sunday. Adrian Gonzalez stroked a two-run single in the top of the 12th and San Diego managed only one hit in the bottom half.

Justin Upton thought he had won the game with a deep blast to center field with two men on and two out, but Dodgers center fielder Joc Pederson tracked the ball down and crashed into the wall to keep it 2-2.

"That was a remarkable catch," Padres manager Bud Black said.

Upton had two RBI and Dale Thayer was dealt the loss, while Padres starter James Shields fanned six batters over seven innings of one-run ball.

The Padres' last four games have been decided by two runs or fewer and they are only 3-5 since winning four straight.

Taking the ball for San Diego Monday will be Tyson Ross and he is just 3-6 with a 3.81 earned run average in 13 starts. Ross fell to 1-3 in his last five appearances and was reached for three runs and nine hits over six innings of a 4-1 loss at Atlanta on Wednesday.

Ross has never faced the A's and is 2-3 with a 4.34 ERA in five home starts.

The A's won two of three meetings with the Padres in 2012 and are 5-2 in the previous seven encounters between the teams.
