Walker, Mariners top Giants
Jun 16, 2015 - 5:25 AM San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Taijuan Walker pitched seven innings of one-run ball to lead the Seattle Mariners in a 5-1 win over the San Francisco Giants on Monday.Logan Morrison went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored and Kyle Seager homered for Seattle, which outhit the Giants 12-7 to take the first of this brief two-game interleague series.
Walker (4-6) struck out six and allowed seven hits in his second straight win.
"That was about as clean a game as we've played in some time," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said. "Very nice to see."
Meanwhile, San Francisco's struggles at AT&T Park continue to mount. The reigning World Series champs have dropped nine straight home games for the first time since an 11-game slide way back in 1940.
"You get in a skid like this, sometimes they do press," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "Why at home, it's hard to explain. But I think we have two or three guys pressing a bit."
Tim Hudson (4-6) took the loss in this one after yielding three runs on eight hits over five-plus innings of work.
The Mariners wasted little time getting to the veteran starter, pushing a run across in the top of the first inning on Nelson Cruz's grounder to second. Morrison led off the game with a single and scored on the fielder's choice.
San Francisco's lone run came an inning later. Like Seattle, consecutive base hits to start the frame led to the run, which came on Nori Aoki's infield single.
Walker settled down after that, retiring 11 straight batters at one point and 16 of the last 17 he faced.
Seattle went ahead for good in the fifth inning, when Morrison singled in Brad Miller and Mike Zunino scored on Austin Jackson's groundout to second. Seager padded the lead in the eighth with his moonshot to center off Jeremy Affeldt, and Austin Jackson made it 5-1 by plating Morrison in the ninth with a single to center.
Mark Lowe and Charlie Furbush pitched 1-2-3 innings in relief of Walker to secure the win.
Game Notes
The Mariners are 12-3 in the last 15 games in this series ... San Francisco is still 11-3 at home against the American League in the regular season since the start of the 2014 season.
