A's cruise past Padres
Jun 16, 2015 - 6:01 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Oakland Athletics spoiled Dave Roberts' managerial debut on Monday night with a 9-1 win over the San Diego Padres in the first of four straight meetings between the clubs. The big news out of San Diego on Monday was the Padres' firing of manager Bud Black. After a big offseason that brought in the likes of Matt Kemp, Justin Upton, Wil Myers and Craig Kimbrel to name a few, Black led the Padres to a 32-33 record before getting ousted. San Diego entered the day six games back of Los Angeles for first place in the NL West.
Roberts, who played two seasons in San Diego, will take over in Black's place while the organization searches for an interim manager.
"I think that obviously it has been a day that has been unexpected for a lot of us. I don't think that has any bearing on the outcome of tonight's game," Roberts said.
When the game got underway, it was a former Padre that helped the A's win a second straight game and the fourth in their last six. Jesse Hahn (4-5), who was acquired by Oakland in an offseason trade that sent catcher Derek Norris to the Padres, limited San Diego to three hits and one run over 6 2/3 innings.
Stephen Vogt hit a grand slam and knocked in five, while Brett Lawrie went 3- for-5 with two RBI for the A's.
Tyson Ross (3-7) was given the loss after yielding four runs on seven hits and five walks in five innings.
The A's broke through with three in the third. Eric Sogard singled with one out and stole second prior to Josh Reddick's RBI single to left. Ben Zobrist walked in the next at-bat before Vogt drove Reddick home with a base hit to left. Lawrie capped the frame with an infield single to Ross that plated Zobrist.
San Diego got one back in the home third on Will Venable's one-out double that scored Alexi Amarista.
Lawrie's third hit of the night came in the fifth and knocked in Zobrist, who reached on one of his four walks on the night and moved to third on Vogt's single.
Oakland put the game away with Vogt's grand slam highlighting a five-run eighth inning.
Game Notes
Hahn went 7-4 with a 3.07 ERA in 14 games (12 starts) with the Friars last season ... Black held a 649-713 record in nine years as the Padres' skipper ... San Diego will host the A's on Tuesday, with Andrew Cashner opposing Scott Kazmir, before the two clubs traveling to Oakland for the final leg of the four-game series ... San Diego placed Myers on the 15-day disabled list prior to the game with a lingering wrist injury. Myers is dealing with tendinitis in his left wrist, an ailment that has already caused the young outfielder to miss 28 games on a prior DL stint. Right-handed pitcher Cory Mazzoni was recalled from Triple-A El Paso to take Myers' place on the active roster ... Oakland improved to 9-20 this season when playing a team with a losing record.
