Chi Chi hopes to bounce back in Arlington

Jun 16, 2015 - 6:11 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Chi Chi Gonzalez tries to bounce back from his first loss on Tuesday when the Texas Rangers resume a four-game series with the Los Angeles Dodgers at Rangers Ballpark.

After tonight's contest, the series will shift to Los Angeles for a pair of games.

Gonzalez had opened his big league career by winning his first two starts without allowing a run. He was nearly as good on Thursday in Oakland, but absorbed the loss, despite yielding one run in seven innings.

"I'm happy. Whatever happens, happens. It's baseball," Gonzalez said. "It's been a great ride throwing up zeros. The first inning, I was only working one side of the plate, but when I got back to using both sides, it worked out."

Gonzalez is the fifth pitcher since 1990 to pitch 5 2/3 innings or more while allowing one run or less in each of his first three starts.

"You can't take anything away from him. He was in control out there," Texas manager Jeff Banister said. "The more he does it, the more we'll expect him to do it. Any time a rookie comes to the bigs and does this type of stuff, you don't expect it three straight starts. We knew he was a good pitcher, and we loved what he's done."

Los Angeles, meanwhile, will turn to lefty Brett Anderson, who is 2-4 with a 3.57 ERA. Anderson did not get a decision on Wednesday against Arizona, but did not pitch well, surrendering four runs and eight hits in five innings of a 7-6 win.

In 10 games (7 starts) against the Rangers Anderson is 1-4 with a 6.81 ERA.

Texas drew first blood on Monday, as Yovani Gallardo tossed seven scoreless innings and the Rangers rolled, 4-1.

Gallardo (6-6) gave up four hits while striking out four and walking three for the Rangers, who have won three of four. Rougned Odor went 3-for-3 and hit a two-run single during a four-run sixth.

Odor was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock prior to the game when outfielder Delino DeShields was put on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring.

"He belongs here," Rangers catcher Robinson Chirinos said of Odor. "It was hard for him to go down to the minors, but he took it like a man."

Yasmani Grandal hit a solo homer in the eighth for the Dodgers. Carlos Frias (4-4) allowed four runs on five hits with four strikeouts and three walks over 5 1/3 innings.

The Dodgers and Rangers last met in 2009 and L.A. took two of three matchups in Arlington. Despite Monday's loss, Los Angeles has won six of the last nine games in this series.
