Phillies seek better results against O's

Jun 16, 2015 - 2:08 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - It has been a season of lows for the Philadelphia Phillies, but their struggles could hit a new nadir on Tuesday night when they conclude the road portion of their four-game series with the Baltimore Orioles.

The Phillies have lost 11 in a row on the road, including the first seven contests of an eight-game road trip. Never before in team history has Philadelphia gone winless on a road trip of eight or more games.

The Phils were shut out for a second straight game and for the third time in four contests with last night's 4-0 setback in Baltimore. They have scored just seven runs over their past six games.

"We're having trouble swinging the bats and getting things going," said Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg.

Aaron Harang was responsible for all four runs on five hits over six innings for the Phillies, who are just 7-27 on the road this season. They have lost seven straight and 17 of their past 20 overall.

Wei-Yin Chen pitched eight scoreless innings and Matt Wieters hit a three-run homer to guide the red-hot Orioles to a ninth victory in 11 games. They moved a game over .500 at 32-31.

Chen was masterful, yielding just four hits and a walk while matching a season high with nine strikeouts. He picked up his second straight victory after five winless starts.

"He was strong tonight," said Wieters. "He went out there with a plan and he carried it out"

Wieters' long ball was his second since returning to the lineup after missing Baltimore's first 53 games following offseason Tommy John surgery. The Orioles are 8-2 since Wieters rejoined the lineup.

Baltimore will host Philadelphia for two games following this contest and tonight will start Chris Tillman, who has struggled to a 4-7 mark and 5.68 earned run average this season despite logging back-to-back winning starts.

Tillman is coming off a 6-5 defeat of the Boston Red Sox on Thursday, charged with four runs on five hits and two walks over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out just two, but managed to stay in the win column after halting a recent seven- start winless drought that stretched from April 23-May 31 with a win over Cleveland on June 5.

The righty will be facing the Phillies for the first time in his career and will do so at Camden Yards, where he is just 1-4 with a 7.28 ERA in six starts this season.

Jerome Williams will try to pick up his first victory in six starts this evening for the Phillies, having lost three straight decisions.

Williams hasn't won since May 16 and the Phillies are 1-8 in his past nine starts. The right-hander gave up four first-run innings on Wednesday against Cincinnati, three of those on a home runs -- and yielded nine hits in total over a six-inning outing to suffer a 5-2 loss. He fell to 3-6 with a 5.71 ERA.

In seven career meetings with the Orioles, including five starts, Williams is 4-2 with a 4.71 ERA.

The Orioles have won eight of their last 10 against the Phillies. The clubs are meeting for the first time since 2012.
