Frazier's two HRs power Reds over Tigers
Jun 17, 2015 - 4:29 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Todd Frazier's second solo home run of the night broke a tie game and lifted the Cincinnati Reds to a 5-2 win over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday.Frazier and Jay Bruce hit back-to-back homers in the fifth inning, and Frazier went deep again in the seventh to help snap the club's three-game skid.
"I just squared them up," Frazier said of his two home runs. "All I try to do is hit the ball hard."
Michael Lorenzen (2-2) limited the Tigers to two runs -- one earned -- on six hits over as many innings to earn the win.
Kyle Ryan (1-1) lasted 6 1/3 innings and was charged with all four runs on just five hits, three of which left the yard.
"I'd rather lose a game on three solo homers than 20 bloop hits over second base," Ryan said. "It's going to happen."
Detroit, which had won six of eight coming in, went ahead in the first inning when Anthony Gose led off with a double and scored on Miguel Cabrera's single through the shift on the right side.
Frazier hammered a pitch over the wall in left leading off the fifth, and Bruce followed with the shortest home run someone can hit at Comerica Park, as his fly ball down the right-field line snuck inside the foul pole and just over the 330-foot sign.
With the bases loaded in the bottom half, Yoenis Cespedes lined a comebacker off Lorenzen. James McCann scored when the ball ricocheted into foul territory, but Gose was thrown out at the plate by Joey Votto. A lengthy replay review did not overturn the bang-bang play.
Frazier broke the tie with another leadoff homer, this time to left-center, and Billy Hamilton tacked another run later in the seventh with a two-out, RBI single.
Hamilton came up with a runner on second in the ninth and bounced one to short. Jose Iglesias tried getting the out at third, but his flip hit the runner and Chris Dominguez easily scored.
Ryan Mattheus, J.J. Hoover and Aroldis Chapman each pitched a scoreless inning of relief behind Lorenzen to close out the win. Chapman struck out the side in the ninth en route to his 14th save.
