Valencia, Blue Jays pound Mets
Jun 18, 2015 - 5:36 AM Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Danny Valencia hit a three-run home run as the Toronto Blue Jays pounded the New York Mets, 8-0, in the opener of a two- game set.Kevin Pillar hit a solo home run and drove in two, while Chris Colabello, Ezequiel Carrera and Russell Martin each had a RBI for the Blue Jays, who had dropped a pair in New York prior to this game. Drew Hutchinson (6-1) scattered four hits and a walk while striking out five in 5 2/3 innings for the win.
"I wasn't as sharp as I like to be," said Hutchinson. "I want to get deeper into games, but I was able to make big pitches when I needed to and I thought tonight was a good step."
Jon Niese (3-7) allowed three runs on seven hits over seven innings for the Mets, who had a three-game winning streak stopped.
"We've got to pick things up a little bit," said New York manager Terry Collins. "What you guys are saying is legit, we gotta start playing better on the road and win some games."
The Blue Jays worked a run across in the second as walks from Colabello and Valencia and a single by Pillar gave the team a 1-0 lead.
With two outs in the top of the sixth, Michael Cuddyer hit a double and Hutchinson left the game for Steve Delabar, who got Travis d'Arnaud to ground out and end the frame.
Toronto pushed another run across in the sixth when Josh Donaldson led off with a double and later scored on a Colabello single for a 2-0 advantage.
Pillar hit a one-out solo homer in the seventh to give the Blue Jays a 3-0 lead.
Delabar pitched a scoreless seventh, while Liam Hendriks and Aaron Loup combined to keep the Mets off the board in the eighth.
Run-scoring singles from Carrera and Martin, along with Valencia's three-run homer in the eighth put the game away.
