Indians hold off Cubs at rainy Progressive Field

Jun 19, 2015 - 6:33 AM Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Giovanny Urshela singled home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning as the Cleveland Indians beat the Chicago Cubs 4-3 on Thursday night.

Michael Brantley had two hits and an RBI for the Indians, who split the two- game series with the Cubs at Progressive Field.

Cubs reliever Travis Wood (3-3) was lifted after giving up consecutive one-out singles in the seventh and the scored tied at 3-3. Urshela then greeted Justin Grimm with a lined shot to left field, scoring Yan Gomes, who left the game with cervical tightness.

Zach McAllister (2-2) struck out four in 1 1/3 innings to pick up the win. Bryan Shaw recorded the final out in the eighth, stranding two runners. He came back out for the ninth and retired the Cubs in order to earn his first save of the season.

"They all did a really good job," Cleveland manager Terry Francona said about his relievers.

The Indians jumped on Cubs right-hander Jason Hammel for two runs in the first. Brantley doubled in Jason Kipnis, and Francisco Lindor scored on a passed ball by Miguel Montero.

Hammel, who made his 200th career start, settled down and struck out the next three batters to avoid further damage.

"I got to set a better tone early," Hammel said.

Kyle Schwarber notched Chicago's first hit with a one-out single in the third and went to third on a two-out single by Dexter Fowler. Lindor cut off right-fielder Brandon Moss' throw and tried to get Fowler as he slid back into first base. His throw, though, hit the runner and skipped away, allowing Schwarber to score.

David Murphy doubled off Hammel to begin the fourth, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Gomes' sacrifice fly for a 3-1 Cleveland lead.

The Cubs tied the game in the fifth on Schwarber's first major league home run, an opposite-field blast to left center off Cleveland starter Danny Salazar.

It started pouring later in the inning after Chicago loaded the bases with two outs.

The game was delayed one hour and 16 minutes and when play resumed, Cody Allen got Montero to fly out to left field for the final out.

Game Notes

Indians center fielder Michael Bourn received a one-game suspension on Thursday, but he appealed the ruling and went 1-for-3. Bourn was disciplined for making contact with umpire Phil Cuzzi during Tuesday's 6-0 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field ... Chicago's Kris Bryant extended his hitting streak to 14 games, the longest active streak in the majors ... The start of the game was delayed 25 minutes by rain.
