Ray aims to build upon strong showing

Jun 20, 2015 - 11:39 AM (SportsNetwork.com) - Robbie Ray tries to follow up one of the most impressive starts of his young career on Saturday when the Arizona Diamondbacks continue a three-game series with the San Diego Padres at Chase Field.

Ray was terrific in a win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Monday, as he scattered two hits over seven scoreless innings to improve to 2-1, while lowering his ERA to 1.09.

"Robbie did a great job tonight," Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt said. "When a guy's putting up a lot of zeros, you're going to get a chance offensively because it puts pressure on their pitcher to be perfect as well. And when we have the lead, Robbie can be a lot more aggressive and not worry about solo homers and stuff like that."

San Diego, meanwhile, will turn struggling righty Tyson Ross, who has lost his last two starts and is 3-7 on the year with a 4.02 ERA. Ross lost for the third time in four starts on Monday against Oakland, as he allowed four runs and seven hits with five walks in five innings.

Ross has faced the D-backs 10 times (9 starts) and is 2-3 against them with a 3.00 ERA.

Arizona grabbed the first game in this series on Friday, as Rubby De La Rosa was solid through seven-plus innings and the Diamondbacks rolled to a 4-2 win.

De La Rosa (6-3) allowed two runs -- one earned -- with six strikeouts in the win.

"He did a great job. He had great stuff tonight," said D-backs manager Chip Hale of De La Rosa. "He had good stuff until the end."

A.J. Pollock had a pair of hits with a run scored and Goldschmidt notched his 55th RBI of the season for the D-backs.

James Shields (7-1) was given his first loss after yielding four runs on eight hits over six innings for the Padres, who have dropped five of their last six.

"We didn't get that big hit today," Padres interim manager Pat Murphy said.

Arizona has split its eight matchups with the Padres this season.
