Yanks resume set with Tigers
Jun 20, 2015 - 1:07 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - With just two games separating the top three teams in the American League East, the New York Yankees try to keep pace as they play the second of a three-game set against the Detroit Tigers at home tonight. The Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays have all win three straight games, keeping them in a tight race for division supremacy with the official start of summer on the horizon.
On Friday night the bright lights of the Big Apple were again shining on Alex Rodriguez as he became the 29th player in major league history to reach 3,000 hits and just the third player to do so with a home run (Wade Boggs and Derek Jeter) as the Yankees captured the 7-2 win.
Rodriguez, who recently became just the third player in history to generate 2,000 RBI, the others being Hank Aaron and Babe Ruth, posted his 13th home run of the season, a solo shot, off Detroit ace Justin Verlander. Also going deep for the hosts were Brett Gardner, who finished with four hits and three RBI, and Didi Gregorius.
"I'm grateful. I'm extremely appreciative to the Yankees giving me an opportunity to put the uniform back on," Rodriguez said. "There were days last year that I sometimes never thought I would get that uniform back on. To be able to play in this stadium in front of these fans, I'm thankful to the Steinbrenner family and the whole Yankee organization."
Yankees starter Adam Warren was credited with his fifth win as he permitted just two runs on seven hits, tying a career high with seven strikeouts, in eight innings of action.
"I thought he was outstanding," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of Warren. "He was as good as he's been all year, and we pushed him. And he was outstanding."
Verlander absorbed the loss after giving up six earned runs on 10 hits and a walk. The hurler struck out just two and surrendered three home runs for the first time since the 2012 campaign.
Bryan Holaday knocked in both runs for the Tigers in the top of the seventh inning, while Miguel Cabrera accounted for two hits to raise his batting average to a league-leading .345.
Detroit has now lost three in a row and is one game over .500 while sitting 5 1/2 games out of contention in the AL Central.
Heading to the mound for the home team tonight will be Nathan Eovaldi, a right-hander who hails from Houston. Eovaldi, who has a career mark of 1-0 with a 1.38 ERA in two previous starts against Detroit, is hoping this outing is more favorable than his last one earlier in the week.
On Tuesday the hurler was pitted against Miami on the road and failed to get out of the first inning. In watching his two-game win streak come to an end, Eovaldi was bombed for eight runs on nine hits, while recording just two outs before heading to the showers.
Countering for the Tigers will be Alfredo Simon, a right-hander who is in his eighth major league campaign, but the first with Detroit. Simon, who is almost halfway to his highest win total for a season, set in 2014 at 15 with Cincinnati, has won two straight and three of his last four appearances.
Six days ago Simon permitted just three hits in five scoreless innings against Cleveland. He walked one and struck out five as he picked up his seventh victory of the season and lowered his ERA to 2.58 in the process.
Since breaking into the league with Baltimore back in 2008, Simon is 1-3 with a 4.31 ERA in five starts and eight total contests against the Yanks.
Prior to the game the Yankees will also unveil a plaque to honor former second baseman Willie Randolph, who played in five All-Star Games and won two World Series during his 13-year tenure with the team.
It's also Old Timer's Day in the Bronx, as a roster of around 50 former Yankees, including Yogi Berra, Reggie Jackson and Joe Torre, will be on hand.
