Yankees hit 5 HRs, rout Tigers

Jun 21, 2015 - 5:29 AM Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Fresh off his latest milestone, Alex Rodriguez belted a three-run homer and drove in five as the New York Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers 14-3 on Saturday night.

Carlos Beltran hit solo home runs from both sides of the plate for the Yankees, who have won 11 of their last 12 home games. Didi Gregorius and Chris Young also went deep and had two RBI apiece while Brett Gardner finished a home run shy of the cycle.

New York right-hander Nathan Eovaldi (6-2) was tagged for two runs on three hits in six-plus innings.

The Yankees banged out a season-high 18 hits, eight off Detroit starter Alfredo Simon (7-4), who allowed seven runs and walked three in 2 2/3 innings.

"I think he had a little trouble getting ahead of the hitters," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said about Simon.

Gardner tripled to begin the first and scored to give New York the early lead. Rodriguez, who became the 29th player to reach 3,000 hits with a first-inning homer off Justin Verlander in Friday's 7-2 win, hit a ground ball to third and Andrew Romine's throw home hit Gardner in the back of the helmet.

The Yankees scored two runs in the second as Gregorius led off with a home run to right field and Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded.

Simon, who was very slow and deliberate on the mound, didn't make it through the third.

"We didn't score a lot of runs in the first two innings, but he threw a ton of pitches and it eventually caught up to him," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi.

The right-hander surrendered a leadoff home run for the second straight inning, this time to Beltran. He then gave up three consecutive two- out singles and was lifted after Chase Headley knocked in Young.

Ian Krol took over on the mound and promptly yielded the home run by Rodriguez, a blast to left that made it 8-0.

Beltran homered off Krol while batting right-handed in the fourth. Gregorius, Stephen Drew and Young then strung together three straight singles to produce the Yankees' 10th run.

New York increased its lead with a three-spot in the fifth. Brian McCann drove in a run with a bases-loaded single and Beltran collected a third RBI when he was hit by a pitch ahead of Gregorius' RBI groundout.

The Tigers scored three runs in the seventh, highlighted by J.D. Martinez's RBI double.

Detroit infielder Josh Wilson gave up a leadoff home run to Young in the eighth.

The Yankees hosted the 69th annual Old-Timers' Day prior to the game ... New York improved to 5-1 against Detroit this season.
