Reds rely on rookie Lorenzen in finale with Miami
Jun 21, 2015 - 11:30 AM (SportsNetwork.com) - Rookie Michael Lorenzen aims for his first home win when the Cincinnati Reds close a three-game series against the Miami Marlins Sunday afternoon.Lorenzen is 0-1 with a 4.10 ERA in five games (4 starts) at Great American Ball Park. The 23-year-old right-hander threw six solid innings in a 5-2 win at Detroit Tuesday. This will be his first appearance against the Marlins.
David Phelps tries to win three consecutive starts for the first time in his career when he takes the mound for the Marlins. The righty has given up two runs over his last 15 innings combined in victories over Colorado and the Yankees the last two times out.
In two games (1 start) against the Reds, Phelps is 1-0 with a 2.16 ERA. He
On Saturday, Derek Dietrich had his first career multi-home run game and the Marlins got seven scoreless innings out of rookie Justin Nicolino in their 5-0 wins.
Dietrich, who had just 15 career home runs in 113 games before Saturday, opened the scoring with a solo homer in the fourth inning and padded Miami's lead with a two-run blast in the seventh.
Justin Bour and J.P Realmuto also drove in runs to back a memorable major league debut by Nicolino, who was called up to make a spot start in place of an injured Tom Koehler.
Nicolino (1-0) needed just 84 pitches to get through his seven innings. He limited Cincinnati, which had scored 18 runs during its three-game winning streak, to four hits.
"To come in and show that kind of composure and presence was tremendous," Marlins manager Dan Jennings said. "He is the first pitcher in Marlins history to go seven shutout innings in his debut ... really impressive."
Reds starter Anthony DeSclafani allowed three runs on four hits but it was enough to absorb the loss, his first since May 17.
"I think he made some pitches he'd like to have back, and they took advantage of them," said Reds manager Bryan Price.
The Reds have won 10 of their past 14 versus the Marlins.
