Mets hope to get on track behind struggling Niese vs. Brewers
Jun 23, 2015 - 2:44 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Mets will have a hard time stopping a five- game losing streak with Jon Niese on the hill, as they open a three-game series Tuesday against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park. The Mets also lost five in a row from May 11-15.
Niese is 0-5 with a 6.30 earned run average in his last seven starts and the Mets are only 1-6 in that stretch. Niese pitched well in last Wednesday's 8-0 defeat at Toronto and allowed three runs in seven innings. He hasn't won since May 9 at Philadelphia and is 1-5 with a 4.17 ERA in seven road starts.
The left-handed Niese has made seven career starts against Milwaukee is 2-1 with a 4.74 ERA across 38 innings.
Mike Fiers will counter Niese for the Brewers and is 3-7 with a 4.50 earned run average though 14 starts. Niese has alternated results in each of his past five starts and fell to 2-4 in his previous six decisions with last Wednesday's 10-2 defeat in Kansas City.
Fiers was reached for six runs and eight hits in five innings against the defending American League champions. Fiers has a 1-4 mark and a 5.45 ERA in seven starts at Miller Park this season and is winless (0-1) in two career games (1 start) against Milwaukee.
New York was swept in three games by the Atlanta Braves and is coming off Sunday's 1-0 loss at Turner Field. Pedro Ciriaco's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning was enough to lift the hosts.
Matt Harvey gave up the run and lasted 6 2/3 innings, striking out five and walking only one batter. He scattered six hits to fall to 7-5 on the season.
"It was a tough series for all of us," Harvey said.
The Brewers have lost eight of their last nine games, and dropped two of three meetings with the Colorado Rockies this past weekend at Coors Field.
Milwaukee was hammered 10-4 on Sunday and Matt Garza was the reason. He allowed 10 runs, seven of which were earned, and 13 hits in 5 1/3 innings.
"He made pitches in, broke a lot of bats and they fell over the infielders head or in front of the outfielders," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said.
Ryan Braun and Hernan Perez had two hits and an RBI apiece for the Brewers.
New York took two of three versus Milwaukee in May and has won four of the last six games in this series.
