Early offense propels Orioles past Red Sox
Jun 24, 2015 - 5:10 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - David Lough hit an early three-run home run and Baltimore came away with a 6-4 decision over Boston at Fenway Park in the opener of a three-game series.Manny Machado and Jimmy Paredes each supplied two hits and an RBI for the Orioles, who have won three straight and six of their last eight.
Ubaldo Jimenez (6-3) struck out eight over five innings, giving up three runs on six hits for the duration.
"It was a good team win," Jimenez said. "The guys really helped me out and I'm happy that I got that 'W'."
Zach Britton came away with his 20th save despite allowing a run in the ninth.
Pablo Sandoval ended 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Red Sox, who had taken two of three in Kansas City over the weekend. Brock Holt, Dustin Pedroia and Hanley Ramirez each drove in a run for the hosts.
Joe Kelly (2-5) was out after 3 2/3 innings, having surrendered eight hits and five runs.
"My command was off today," said Kelly. "I couldn't throw the fastball where I wanted to and fell behind some hitters, which ultimately led to the big inning there and ended up running out of the game there."
Ryan Flaherty walked with one down in the sixth, was sacrificed to second and then scored when Machado hit a double off Alexi Ogando and Baltimore was up by a 6-3 count.
The Red Sox came up empty until their last turn at the plate against Britton. Mookie Betts walked, moved up on a groundout and scored on Pedroia's double. David Ortiz, though, lined out to end the game.
The Orioles struck four times in the second. Singles by Chris Davis, Travis Snider and J.J. Hardy loaded the bases with none out, then Flaherty's sacrifice fly preceded Lough's three-run shot which landed beyond the low wall in right.
Boston's first run came in the home third when Holt's grounder scored Sandy Leon, then a hit from Paredes plated Lough with two down in the fourth for a 5-1 contest.
Sandoval singled home Ramirez in the home fourth and the Sox pulled to 5-3 in the last of the fifth on a Ramirez base hit which scored Pedroia.
