Garcia shoots for another strong showing in Miami

Jun 24, 2015 - 11:53 AM (SportsNetwork.com) - Jaime Garcia tries to string his third straight scoreless appearance together on Wednesday when the St. Louis Cardinals continue a three-game series with the Miami Marlins at Marlins Park.

Garcia twirled eight scoreless innings to beat the Kansas City Royals on June 12 then scattered four hits over six scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Minnesota Twins on Thursday.

He is 2-3 with a 1.76 ERA in six quality starts this season.

"(Garcia )really had a good feel for really everything," manager Mike Matheny said. "Fastball was sinking on both sides of the plate, he had a little bit of a cutter today, his changeup was plus, he was smart with his curveball. It's just a shame we couldn't make more of it."

Garcia has faced Miami twice without recording a decision and has only allowed two runs in 10 innings of those contests.

Miami, meanwhile, will counter with righty Mat Latos, who is 2-4 with a 5.37 ERA, Latos did not get a decision on Thursday in New York, as he held the Yankees to a three runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings of his team's 9-4 loss.

Latos is 5-5 lifetime versus the Cards with a 5.69 ERA in 12 starts.

St. Louis drew first blood in this series on Tuesday, as Mark Reynolds provided the tie-breaking RBI hit in the seventh inning, and the Cardinals overcame Giancarlo Stanton's 26th homer of the season and held on for a 4-3 win.

"I'm just a straight slap hitter," Reynolds said. "I was able to lay off some sliders in the dirt, got a pitch I could hit."

Xavier Scruggs doubled in two runs and scored the go-ahead run. Jason Heyward belted a solo homer for the Cardinals, who won for the third time in four games.

Carlos Martinez (8-3) had nine strikeouts and gave up eight hits and three runs over seven innings to win for the fifth time in his last six decisions.

"We got some hits off of him, waited him out a little bit," Stanton said. "He gets the meat of the plate and we were able to get some hits. He did a good job of keeping it going."

Stanton's titanic two-run blast to left field, a 484-foot shot in the first inning, and Adeiny Hechavarria's RBI single in the second wasn't enough run support for Jose Urena, who yielded six hits and three runs over five frames.

The Marlins were 4-2 versus the Cardinals last season.
