Zimmermann hopes to get on track against Braves

Jun 24, 2015 - 2:38 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Jordan Zimmermann will try to put the brakes on a personal three-game losing streak Wednesday, when the Washington Nationals resume their set with the Atlanta Braves in D.C.

Zimmermann is 0-3 with a 7.63 earned run average in his last three appearances and gave up three runs on eight hits in seven innings of a 5-0 loss versus Tampa Bay last Wednesday. He has allowed 13 runs during the slide and hasn't won since June 2 versus Toronto.

The right-handed Zimmermann was 4-0 in eight previous starts before the slide and has a 5-5 mark to go along with a 3.75 ERA in 14 outings. He is 3-3 in eight home starts and 5-2 with a 3.15 ERA in 12 career starts against Atlanta.

Washington has won four in a row and pushed its lead atop the NL East standings to 2 1/2 games with Tuesday's 3-1 win in the opener of this series.

Anthony Rendon had four hits and an RBI, Wilson Ramos went 3-for-4 and both Denard Span and Michael Taylor had two hits and an RBI for the Nationals. Stephen Strasburg returned from the disabled list to pitch five shutout innings for the win and Drew Storen nailed down his 21st save with a scoreless ninth.

"I thought he pitched well," Washington manager Matt Williams said of Strasburg. "Five strong innings for us."

The Braves had their three-game winning streak stopped and Alex Wood was dealt the loss for allowing all three runs and 10 hits in seven innings.

"We battled from start to finish," Wood said. "I thought (Strasburg) looked terrific tonight. Sometimes you just have to tip your cap."

Cameron Maybin homered and Nick Markakis collected three hits in defeat.

Prior to the game, the Braves placed star first baseman Freddie Freeman on the disabled list with a sprained wrist.

Shelby Miller started 5-1 with a 1.50 earned run average through his first nine starts, but is 0-2 in his last five. Miller gets the call for the Braves Wednesday and was beaten by Boston on Thursday, allowing four runs (1 earned) and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings of a 5-2 loss.

Miller is 5-3 overall with a 1.99 ERA and has a 3-1 record in eight road assignments. The righty has made four career starts against the Nationals and owns a 2-0 record with a sparkling 0.73 ERA.

The Nats have won six of seven head-to-head meetings with Atlanta this season.
