deGrom attempts to get the Mets off the schneid
Jun 25, 2015 - 10:55 AM (SportsNetwork.com) - Jacob deGrom hopes for some support on Thursday when the New York Mets try to salvage the finale of their three-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park.deGrom pitched well enough to get the win on Friday in Atlanta, but the bullpen was unable to hold a lead and the National League's reigning Rookie of the Year was dealt his first loss since May 11. He allowed two runs and four hits in 7 1/3 innings before being lifted.
"Our pitching's very good. Jake's very good," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "We're just not scoring runs. We've said before, they live on the edge. They can't make too many mistakes, because we're not scoring. "But he pitched a great game."
deGrom, who is 7-5 on the year with a 2.34 ERA, has faced the Brewers three times and is 2-1 against them with a 2.00 ERA.
Milwaukee will oppose him with an impressive young right-hander of its own in Taylor Jungmann, who has won two of his three starts and is pitching to a 3.50 ERA. Jungmann beat the Colorado Rockies on Friday, but surrendered four runs and eight hits in six innings.
"Taylor did a heck of a job," Milwaukee skipper Craig Counsell said. "For me, the starting pitcher at Coors Field, you just try to beat the other starting pitcher. That's your job. That's who you're going against. Just beat him, and he did that."
Milwaukee handed the Mets their seventh straight loss on Wednesday, as Jimmy Nelson was excellent to help the Brewers to a 4-1 win.
Nelson (4-8) limited New York to one run on two hits with five strikeouts over eight innings for the Brewers, who have won three of five.
"He was good all night tonight," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said of Nelson."It's a great night for him to build on."
Scooter Gennett homered in the win, while Ryan Braun, Adam Lind and Carlos Gomez each had an RBI.
Bartolo Colon (9-6) was touched up for four runs on 10 hits in six innings, while Curtis Granderson homered as New York's lone source of offense.
New York took two of three versus Milwaukee in May, but the teams have split the last eight games in this series.
