DeGrom, Mets beat Brewers to snap 7-game skid

Jun 25, 2015 - 11:43 PM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Jacob deGrom sparkled in eight strong innings and the New York Mets snapped a season-worst seven-game losing streak with a 2-0 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday afternoon.

DeGrom (8-5) struck out seven, walked none and gave up just four hits to snap a two-start winless streak. The 2014 NL Rookie of the Year also singled and scored a run in the finale of the three-game series.

The Mets avoided what would have been their first winless road trip of at least eight games in almost 24 years.

The Brewers had won the first two games of the series on the heels of a 1-8 stretch. It was the third time this month they failed in an attempt to sweep a three-game series.

"I don't know what the magic formula to that is," said Brewers manager Craig Counsell. "To me, we got beat today. The guy pitched a good game and beat us. I haven't come up with the magic formula to determine how to win the third game more than the other games. But deGrom pitched a good game today."

Rookie right-hander Taylor Jungmann pitched five scoreless innings in his fourth career start, giving up four hits and two walks while striking out five.

He was overshadowed by DeGrom, who retired 20 of the first 21 Milwaukee batters, giving up just a double to Hernan Perez in the third inning.

"He's got tremendous stuff and he knows how to use it," said Mets manager Terry Collins, who was ejected from the game. "His last six or seven starts have been outstanding. He's the guy we saw last year. He's legit. He's not going through any sophomore slump."

Adam Lind and Shane Peterson hit two-out singles in the seventh, but deGrom recovered to get Jean Segura on a fly ball to end the inning.

He gave up a leadoff single to Scooter Gennett in the eighth, but Gennett was erased on a double play and Jeurys Familia threw a perfect ninth inning to earn his 20th save of the season.

Collins was ejected by second base umpire Larry Vanover in the fourth inning for arguing after Vanover called Darrell Ceciliani out on an attempted steal -- the second time a Mets player was thrown out trying to swipe second.

Replays showed Ceciliani likely beat the tag, but the Mets already used their challenge on a play at home plate in the second inning after Michael Cuddyer was thrown out trying to score from second base on a single.

The Mets had baserunners in four of five innings against Jungmann but didn't score until the sixth, when Wilmer Flores' double into the left-field corner off Michael Blazek (4-2) plated Cuddyer from first base.

DeGrom, Dilson Herrera and Curtis Granderson hit consecutive singles off Jonathan Broxton to load the bases in the in the seventh and deGrom scored on Lucas Duda's infield hit, which was deflected by pitcher Will Smith.

The teams split six meetings this season ... The Brewers host Minnesota for three games starting Friday ... The Mets start a six-game homestand on Friday against Cincinnati.
