Fister shines as Nationals blank Braves

Jun 26, 2015 - 12:30 AM Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Ian Desmond hit a two-run homer, Doug Fister tossed seven scoreless innings and the Washington Nationals completed a three-game sweep of the Atlanta Braves with a 7-0 victory on Thursday.

Fister (3-3) gave up four hits while striking out four and walking one. The Nationals starting pitching staff has now thrown 41 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings, a new franchise record.

Yunel Escobar, Clint Robinson, Michael Taylor and Matt den Dekker had one RBI apiece for the Nationals, who have won six in a row.

Atlanta starter Matt Wisler (1-1) struggled in his second major league start, allowing six runs -- four earned -- on nine hits over four innings. The right- hander gave up one run over eight innings against the Mets last Friday.

"Yeah, you're not going to be on your game every game," said Wisler. "These guys are the best hitters in the world. I wasn't on today. They beat me."

Atlanta right fielder Nick Markakis saw his record streak of 398 consecutive games without an error end in the first inning. Markakis misplayed Denard Span's leadoff single, allowing Span to advance to second base. Following a sacrifice bunt, Span scored on Escobar's groundout.

A two-time American League Gold Glove winner, Markakis broke the previous record of 392 consecutive errorless outfield games by Darren Lewis during the 1990-1994 seasons. Before Thursday, his last error was in August 2012, when Markakis was in his seventh of nine seasons with the Orioles.

Washington scored two more runs in the second. Wilson Ramos doubled and raced home when Desmond reached on Kelly Johnson's throwing error. Desmond crossed the plate on Taylor's double off the wall in center.

Wisler's struggles continued in the third. Escobar doubled and scored on Robinson's single. Desmond hit a two-run homer two batters later to make it 6-0.

"Yeah, he stayed on a fastball away and hit it over the fence and then got another base hit later in the game," said Nationals manager Matt Williams of Desmond.

The Braves failed to score after putting their first two men on in the fifth. Johnson singled and Jonny Gomes was hit by a pitch, but Pedro Ciriaco flied out and pinch-hitter Eury Perez grounded into a double play.

The Nationals tacked on another run in the eighth. Taylor reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to second on Jace Peterson's throwing error and scored on den Dekker's single.
