Tribe start road trip in Baltimore
Jun 26, 2015 - 1:19 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Baltimore Orioles welcome the Cleveland Indians to Camden Yards on Friday night to kick off a three-game weekend series.Cleveland had the day off Thursday after concluding a 3-5 homestand. The team now embarks on a 10-game road swing. The Indians are coming off Wednesday's 8-2 win over Detroit, in which they out-hit the Tigers, 13-5.
Corey Kluber will toe the rubber for Cleveland on Friday. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner is just 3-9 through 15 starts despite carrying a 3.65 ERA and ranking fifth in the majors with 117 strikeouts. Over his past eight starts, the right-hander sports a 2.59 ERA with 10.8 K's per nine innings while holding opposing hitters to a .218 average.
Kluber was charged with a loss against Tampa Bay on Saturday after allowing four runs in seven innings to go with four walks and six strikeouts. He entered that outing with the lowest run-support average (2.33) among qualified major league starters.
"You want to win games," Kluber said. "And when you're not scoring, it's hard to win. At the same time, I've got to do a better job of not letting the other team score."
Baltimore will counter with Wei-Yin Chen, who has not fared much better in the run support department this season. The southpaw boasts a 2.89 ERA through 13 starts but only a 3-4 record to show for it.
However, two of those wins have come over his last two starts. Chen's last outing was also his most dominant of the season, as he worked eight shutout innings against Philadelphia and yielded only four hits and a walk while striking out a season-high nine batters on June 15.
"I felt great," Chen said. "All my pitches were working, and Wieters (called) a great game for me and my teammates played (great) defense behind me," Chen said.
Despite Chen's recent success, he was briefly optioned to Class A Advanced Frederick to clear roster space for outfielder Chris Parmelee, a decision Chen expressed his disappointment about on social media and in remarks to reporters.
"We talked, me and (Orioles manager) Buck (Showalter)," Chen told the Baltimore Sun. "We talked and I accepted it. I was disappointed, but I accepted the decision because ? I believe the team had good reason. After I got sent down here, I think that we better just leave it in the past."
While Cleveland was idle on Thursday, the Orioles were busy claiming an 8-6 road win over Boston, their fourth win in a five-game span to wrap up a 5-3 road trip. Following this series, they will stick around Camden Yards to host the Texas Rangers in a four-game set next week.
The O's won two of three in Cleveland earlier this month.
