Padres, D-backs commence set at Petco Park
Jun 26, 2015 - 2:24 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Diego Padres try to avoid a third straight loss on Friday evening when they begin a three-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Padres finished up an eight-game road trip at 3-5 after losing Thursday's rubber match of a three-game set with the San Francisco Giants. Despite a two- run homer by Matt Kemp, San Diego lost 13-8.
James Shields gave up seven runs, nine hits and two walks in just four-plus innings. He lost his second straight start after winning each of his first seven decisions with San Diego.
"There are no moral victories," Padres manager Pat Murphy said. "I still see goodness. I see good players, guys getting better, even the guys who are slumping, I see flashes."
The Diamondbacks also are coming off a loss, falling 6-4 to the Colorado Rockies on Thursday to conclude a three-game set. Arizona failed to move to .500 and has alternated wins and losses over its past 10 games.
A.J. Pollock had two hits, an RBI and a run scored, while Paul Goldschmidt, Danny Dorn and Welington Castillo also brought in a run for the Diamondbacks. However, Colorado grabbed control of the game with a five-run eighth inning.
"It's just very typical of playing in this ballpark," said Arizona manager Chip Hale of Colorado's Coors Field. "The game's never over. One-run leads are tough to hold. The one thing that was disappointing today was just not being able to stop the damage once it started."
San Diego's Tyson Ross is coming off his best start of the season and gets to face the same opponent tonight in Arizona.
Ross hurled his first complete game of the season and third of his career last Saturday in an 8-1 win over the Diamondbacks. He allowed just the one run on four hits and one walk while striking out nine, improving to 4-7 with a 3.61 earned run average this season.
"That was a beautiful outing," Murphy said of Ross, who also drove in a run.
The 28-year-old righty, who snapped a two-start slide, improved to 3-3 lifetime versus the Diamondbacks with a 2.73 ERA in 11 games (10 starts).
Robbie Ray started opposite of Ross last weekend and counters him again after struggling in the loss.
Ray took on the Padres in his fifth start this season and the 11th of his career, touched for four runs -- three earned -- on six hits and two walks over 5 2/3 innings. He did strike out a career-high seven batters, but fell to 2-2 on the year with a 1.78 ERA.
"He pitched OK. He pitched fine," Hale said of Ray. "I thought he threw the ball very well. It's a step in the right direction."
The young left-hander had yielded just three earned runs over his four starts and 24 2/3 innings, but matched that in his first career outing against the Padres.
These two clubs have split 10 meetings this season, with the Padres taking two of three in the lone matchup in San Diego from April 13-15.
