Syndergaard helps Mets edge Reds

Jun 27, 2015 - 4:50 AM Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Noah Syndergaard tossed eight strong innings to lead the New York Mets in a 2-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds to open a three-game set.

Syndergaard (3-4) allowed a run on five hits with five strikeouts for the Mets, who have won their past two after dropping seven straight. Curtis Granderson hit a solo home run and Lucas Duda had the other RBI.

"I just had everything working for me," said Syndergaard. "I was just able to make quality pitches and execute and get some quick outs. I knew this team was going to be a fairly aggressive lineup, a lot of veterans on the team, so I knew that they would capitalize on my mistakes. But I felt like I kept the ball down, changed speeds, kept them off balance really well."

Johnny Cueto (4-5) allowed two runs on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts over six innings for the Reds, who had won six of eight coming in. Chris Dominguez drove in the Reds' only run.

The Mets wasted no time in taking the lead as Granderson led off the home first with his 12th home run of the season.

In the second, the Reds were able to tie the game. Singles from Jay Bruce and Brayan Pena, followed by a fielder's choice from Eugenio Suarez left runners at the corners before Dominguez grounded out to short to plate Bruce.

New York nearly went back on top in the fourth as the team had men on the corners before Wilmer Flores hit a grounder to third that saw Ruben Tejada caught in a run down. Juan Lagares then hit into a fielder's choice to end the frame.

The Mets, though, were able to jump on top in the fifth as the team loaded the bases and Duda drew a two-out walk to force in a run for a 2-1 lead.

"I think he was trying to find his way out of that inning without the ball being put in play and he just wasn't able to make the pitch he needed to to get out of that inning," Reds manager Bryan Price said of Cueto.

Cincinnati left a man at third in the eighth when Brandon Phillips popped out to end the inning, and Jeurys Familia pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 21st save of the season.

Game Notes

Granderson has 32 leadoff home runs in his career ... Cincinnati first baseman Joey Votto went 0-for-4 and had a streak of reaching base safely snapped at 32 games. Second baseman Brandon Phillips went 1-for-4 and has hit safely in all 30 career road games against the Mets ... Cueto fell to 3-4 in 11 games against the Mets ... Syndergaard is 3-1 in five starts at Citi Field this season.
