Ross, Padres shut down D-backs
Jun 27, 2015 - 5:11 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Tyson Ross and three relievers combined on a two-hitter as the San Diego Padres downed the Arizona Diamondbacks, 4-2, in the opener of a three-game set on Friday.Ross (5-7), who tossed a complete game in a win at Arizona last Saturday, allowed two runs on two hits and five walks with five strikeouts over six innings.
Brandon Maurer, Joaquin Benoit and Craig Kimbrel each tossed a scoreless inning of relief to help San Diego snap its two-game skid.
"We're not on all cylinders by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm real pleased with the mental toughness Tyson showed... It was a great game tonight," Padres manager Pat Murphy said.
Matt Kemp and Yonder Alonso each drove in a run for the Padres, while Cory Spangenberg went 3-for-3 with two runs scored.
Arizona starter Robbie Ray (2-3) had one of his team's two hits on offense and was dealt the loss after giving up three runs -- two earned -- with five punchouts in six innings.
"We just didn't play the defense that we are used to playing," D-backs manager Chip Hale said. "We're usually tighter than that."
Derek Norris reached on an error by first baseman Paul Goldschmidt with one out in the first. Yonder Alonso followed with a double that knocked in Norris and Alonso was eventually tagged out after a lengthy rundown.
Goldschmidt then made up for the mistake in the third with a two-out, two-run single that gave the D-backs a 2-1 lead.
Arizona handed another run to the Padres in the home fourth as Cory Spangenberg raced home on Welington Castillo's throwing error following a strikeout of Matt Kemp.
Kemp's sacrifice fly in the fifth drove in Spangenberg for a 3-2 Padres lead, and they tacked on an insurance run in the eighth on Justin Upton's infield single.
Kimbrel came on in the ninth and recorded his 19th save of the season.
