Jays go for series win vs. Rangers

Jun 27, 2015 - 2:14 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Toronto Blue Jays will go for their second straight win immediately following a five-game losing streak as they host the Texas Rangers Saturday in the second contest of a three-game series at Rogers Centre.

Yovani Gallardo will hit the mound for the Rangers in the start, while Toronto counters with minor-league call up Matt Boyd.

Gallardo has been on fire lately for the Rangers, but will try to pull his record above the .500 mark Saturday. He heads into the weekend with a 6-6 mark this season, and owns a solid 2.98 earned run average.

Gallardo has thrown 12 combined scoreless innings in his past two starts for Texas, and has yet to allow more than two runs in a game since May 19. In his last three starts, the righty is 1-0 with a 0.95 ERA and 17 strikeouts.

In his only career start against the Blue Jays, Gallardo went 6 2/3 innings and allowed three runs back in the 2012 campaign.

Boyd was called up and will make his major league debut Saturday for Toronto.

The 24-year-old has spent time with Double-A New Hampshire, where he earned a 6-1 record with a stunning 1.10 ERA in 12 starts. Batters were only hitting .115 against the 6-foot-3 left-hander.

He earned two starts with Triple-A Buffalo, where he battled to a 1-1 record with a 2.25 ERA in 12 innings of work.

The Blue Jays were able to put a stop to their five-game skid Friday night in the series opener with a resounding 12-2 victory.

Mark Buehrle picked up the win after a sensational seven-inning performance in which he allowed two runs on five hits, fanning five Rangers. Nick Martinez picked up the loss for Texas after surrendering nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits in six innings of work.

Texas jumped ahead quickly thanks to Prince Fielder's 12th home run of the year - a solo shot. But Edwin Encarnacion made sure that didn't last long, sending a grand slam to center field in the bottom of the first.

Encarnacion finished the game with two homers and five total RBI. He has 16 homers this season and 47 runs driven in. Russell Martin managed a pair of runs driven in for Toronto.

Fielder and Leonys Martin supplied the only runs for Texas in the crushing defeat.

Friday's contest was the first meeting between the sides this season.
