Rays, Red Sox continue set at the Trop
Jun 27, 2015 - 2:21 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Teams on polar opposite sides of the American League East standings clash Saturday in the second portion of a three-game series at Tropicana Field, as the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays duke it out.Wade Miley gets the starting nod for Boston, while Tampa Bay counters with Matt Andriese, who is trying to rebound from a very tough outing in his last appearance.
Miley, with a few exceptions, has been stellar since the start of May. In his last 10 outings, he's 6-4 with a 3.47 earned run average. Overall Miley is 7-6 with a 4.50 ERA, 52 strikeouts and 26 walks this season.
The lefty newcomer for the Sox has won in back-to-back starts, and is coming off a six-inning outing against Kansas City in which Boston pounded the Royals, 13-2. Miley allowed just five hits and no runs while on the hill.
In three career starts against the Rays, Miley is a perfect 3-0 with an outstanding 0.47 ERA and a .154 batting average against in 19 innings of work. He's surrendered just one run to Tampa in his lifetime.
Andriese is continuing to fill in for the injured Jake Odorizzi, and is coming off a start in which he pitched a subpar game. He enters the weekend sporting a 2-2 record with a 3.79 ERA.
The 25-year-old picked up a loss against Toronto on Monday, which ended a two- game win streak. Andriese lasted 5 1/3 innings on the mound and surrendered four runs on five hits, giving up three home runs to Blue Jays batters.
He's struggled a bit at the Trop this season, owning just a 1-2 record with a 4.33 ERA in 27 innings of work. Opponents are batting .306 against Andriese at Tropicana Field in his seven home appearances.
Boston held a 3-1 lead over Tampa more than midway through Friday night's contest, but a pair of runs in the home half of the sixth inning knotted the score at 3-3. No one else crossed the plate, and extra innings were needed to settle an eventual 4-3 Red Sox victory.
Starters Rick Porcello for Boston and Alex Colome for the Rays each surrendered three runs in six innings pitched apiece. Alexi Ogando's 1/3 inning of work on the mound for the Sox was enough to earn him the victory, while Koji Uehara picked up his 15th save.
Alejandro De Aza and Jackie Bradley Jr. each drove in a run in the second inning for Boston, which took a 2-0 lead early. The visitors were up 3-1 when Tampa plated two in the bottom of the sixth.
A Brock Holt single in the top of the 10th inning, which plated Mookie Betts, proved to be the winning run.
Tampa Bay still owns a 4-3 advantage over the Red Sox in head-to-head matchups this season.
