Rays shut down Sox thanks to Andriese

Jun 28, 2015 - 2:10 AM St. Petersburg, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Andriese tossed six innings of scoreless one-hit ball and Tampa Bay downed Boston by a 4-1 count in the second of three between the clubs.

Andriese (3-2) fanned five and did not issue a walk over his 70-pitch outing. Brad Boxberger tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his 20th save.

"There's not much more you could ask," noted Rays manager Kevin Cash. "I think Matt Andriese is really the story today."

Jake Elmore, Rene Rivera and Evan Longoria all went deep for the Rays, who were coming off a pair of extra-inning defeats.

Alejandro De Aza homered, while Xander Bogaerts and Brock Holt singled for the Red Sox, who have dropped three of their last five.

"We could never really get anything going offensively," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "He challenged us throughout the time he was on the mound and beat us."

Wade Miley (7-7) gave up two runs on five hits over his 6 1/3-inning outing, where he struck out eight.

Asdrubal Cabrera kicked off the home fifth with a triple to the wall in center, then scored when Elmore managed to drop a ball just inside the left- field foul pole.

Rivera then reached the seats in left for a 3-0 Tampa Bay edge in the seventh.

De Aza finally provided the Sox some spark with his long line-drive homer to right in the eighth, only the second hit allowed by Tampa Bay pitching.

Longoria restored the hosts' three-run edge in the bottom portion on a long shot to left.

Boxberger gave up a two-out single to Holt, who was stranded at second after moving up on indifference when Bogaerts struck out.

Andriese retired the first 11 batters he faced before Bogaerts' hit with two down in the fourth. He came out after sending down 18 of the 19 batters faced.

"I had a feeling," Andriese said of how he knew he'd be pulled. "Cash came up to me and said, 'That's it. You did a great job and got us to this point.' It's just the way we do things over here. We have a lot of trust in our bullpen."

Miley only gave up two hits, but walked one and hit a batter through the first four frames.

Tampa Bay extended its MLB-best record to 30-6 when scoring first this season ... Red Sox center fielder Mookie Betts saw his hit streak ended at 13 games after an 0-for-4 performance ... Boston sunk to 12-24 this season against AL East foes.
