Montgomery hopes for another gem in opener with Padres

Jun 30, 2015 - 12:02 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Montgomery tries to follow up his first career shutout on Tuesday when the Seattle Mariners begin a two-game set with the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.

Montgomery scattered five hits and struck out 10 to beat the Kansas City Royals last Tuesday to improve to 2-2, while lowering his ERA to 2.04. He had been drafted by the Royals in the first round in 2008

"I probably had a little more emotion going in than I normally do," said Montgomery, who has allowed more than two runs just once in his five starts . "I know a lot of those guys. I was with them for five years. It was definitely a little extra added on to it."

Seattle comes into this set after a series loss to Los Angeles that culminated with a 3-2, 10-inning setback to the Angels on Sunday. The Mariners wasted yet another terrific outing from starter Felix Hernandez, who gave up just one hit while striking out eight over six scoreless innings.

"Felix had heat exhaustion. He ran out of gas," said Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon. "It was a tough day."

Seattle has lost five of seven overall.

San Diego, meanwhile, was denied a sweep in its weekend series with the Arizona Diamondbacks, falling, 6-4, in Sunday's finale.

Odrisamer Despaigne (3-6) took the loss after giving up five runs -- four earned -- with six strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings.

Derek Norris hit two home runs for the Padres, who have dropped three of five..

"We played well all series," said Norris. "We just had some unfortunate breaks today."

Getting the call for the Padres on Tuesday will be righty Ian Kennedy, who is 4-6 with a 5.09 ERA. Kennedy lost to the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday, as he allowed six runs (one earned) and five hits in six innings. He also struck out six and walked four batters.

Kennedy lost to Seattle back on May 12.

These teams split a two-game series in Seattle earlier in the year.
