Pineda throws Yankees to MLB victory

Apr 11, 2017 - 4:35 AM Pitcher Michael Pineda starred as the New York Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 8-1 in their Major League Baseball home season opener.

The Dominican retired his first 20 batters, struck out 11 and walked none.

Aaron Judge, Chase Headley and Starlin Castro provided home runs for the Yankees, while a Logan Morrison homer blotted Pineda's book slightly.

The Yankees scored five in the eighth innings to make it back-to-back victories.

Jay Bruce scored two home runs as the New York Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3.

Jerry Blevins got two outs as the Mets won their first road game of the season.

Elsewhere, there were big wins for the Cincinnati Reds and Washington Nationals, who ran out 7-1 winners against the Pittsburgh Pirates and 14-6 victors over the St Louis Cardinals respectively.

The Detroit Tigers beat the Boston Red Sox 2-1, the Oakland Athletics scored twice in the fourth innings to see off the Kansas City Royals, and the San Francisco Giants overcame the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-1.

The Seattle Mariners shut down the Houston Astros 6-0 and the San Diego Padres overcame the Colorado Rockies 5-3.
