Diamondbacks' Ray drilled by line drive, exits vs. Cards

Jul 29, 2017 - 1:05 AM ST. LOUIS -- Arizona Diamondbacks starter Robbie Ray was drilled in the back of the head by a line drive from St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Luke Voit and knocked out of Friday night's game in the second inning.

Ray's follow-through, which took him to the third base side of the mound, left the back of his head exposed. Ray tried to duck, but the ball nailed him and caromed into foul territory in front of the Arizona dugout, where third baseman Daniel Descalso caught it for an out.

Ray sat up on the mound after a couple of minutes and was whisked off on a cart. T.J. McFarland relieved Ray with two outs and none on in the second.

There was no score at the time of Ray's departure. He pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing a hit and a walk with two strikeouts.
