Rays agree to terms with RHP Wheeler

Jan 16, 2008 - 12:07 AM ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) -- The Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday agreed to terms with righthander Dan Wheeler on a one-year contract, thereby avoiding arbitration.

The 30-year-old Wheeler went 1-9 with a 5.30 ERA in 70 games with the Houston Astros and Tampa Bay last season.

The eight-year veteran who was acquired from Houston for Ty Wigginton on July 28, Wheeler set career-highs with 74 2/3 innings and 82 strikeouts last season.

This is Wheeler's second stint with the team after he broke into the majors with Tampa Bay in 1999.

Overall, Wheeler is 12-26 with 25 saves and a 4.09 in 327 career games with Tampa Bay, the New York Mets and Houston.
