Mariners place INF Espinosa on waivers

Aug 21, 2017 - 1:12 AM The Seattle Mariners placed infielder Danny Espinosa on waivers Sunday for the purpose of granting him his unconditional release.

Espinosa, 30, appeared in eight games with Seattle after signing as a free agent on July 24. He hit .188 (3-for-16) with two runs scored, two doubles and two RBIs with the Mariners.

Espinosa began the season with the Los Angeles Angels, batting .162 with six home runs and 29 RBIs in 77 games. He was designated for assignment by the Angels on July 16 and released on July 20.

In parts of eight major league seasons with the Washington Nationals (2010-16), Angels and Mariners, Espinosa is a career .221 hitter with 98 homers and 316 RBIs in 864 games.

The Mariners also called up infielder Taylor Motter from Triple-A Tacoma.

Motter, 27, is hitting .350 with seven home runs and 18 RBIs in 25 games with Tacoma after being optioned on July 24. He began the season with Seattle, appearing in 70 games and batting .204 with seven home runs and 23 RBIs.

Motter was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays on Dec. 16. He made his major league debut with the Rays in 2016, appearing in 33 games.
