An opportunity arose when regular leadoff hitter Tim Beckham was a scratch because of a tooth issue. "More necessity, but through necessity sometimes you find out other things," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "You look at walk totals. There are certain categories with young players that change in the big leagues, go up, and I'm hoping that his walk totals go up. But kind of, if not him, who?" Hays went 0-for-4 and is batting .259. He was Baltimore's ninth leadoff hitter this season.
