Cueto to stay with Giants through 2021

Nov 5, 2017 - 10:20 PM San Francisco Giants right-hander Johnny Cueto exercised his player option to remain under contract with the team through 2021.

The option is worth $89 million, and Cueto will make $21 million for each of the next four seasons. The Giants hold a club option for 2022 at $22 million and owe Cueto $5 million if they decline to pick it up.

The opt-out clause was part of the six-year, $130 million contract Cueto signed with the Giants prior to the 2016 campaign.

Cueto, 31, had a mediocre season in 2017 by going 8-8 with a 4.52 ERA in 25 starts.

The right-hander went 18-5 with a 2.79 ERA in his first season with the Giants.

Overall, the two-time All-Star is 122-83 with a 3.33 ERA in 10 big league seasons with the Cincinnati Reds, Kansas City Royals and the Giants.
