Giants acquire All-Star 3B Longoria from Rays
Dec 20, 2017 - 6:55 PM The San Francisco Giants acquired three-time All-Star third baseman Evan Longoria from the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday. The Rays, in turn, receive top infielder prospect Christian Arroyo, minor league pitchers Matt Krook and Stephen Woods. Tampa Bay must take on the last year of outfielder Denard Span's contract, which is for $9 million.
"This move fills an important need for our club and completes one of our offseason goals," said Brian Sabean, the Giants executive vice president of baseball operations.
"Evan has been one of the best third baseman in the game over the last decade, and we are thrilled to add him to the organization. Moving forward, we will continue to work on additional opportunities to improve the club for 2018."
Longoria has five seasons remaining on a six-year, $100 million contract that also includes a seventh-year club option.
"We are pleased to bring Evan Longoria to the Giants organization," Giants general manager Bobby Evans said. "Evan gives us a Gold Glove-caliber player at third base and also provides us a middle-of-the-order presence in the lineup. His durability and leadership will strengthen our club moving forward.
Longoria has spent his entire 10-year career with Tampa Bay, winning Rookie of the Year honors in 2008 and claiming his third Gold Glove Award in 2017.
The 32-year-old batted .261 with 20 homers and 86 RBIs last season and is hitting .270 with 261 homers and 892 RBIs in his career.
"Evan is our greatest Ray. For a decade, he's been at the center of all of our successes, and it's a very emotional parting for us all," Rays principal owner Stuart Sternberg said. "I speak for our entire organization in wishing Evan and his wonderful family our absolute best."
Arroyo, who is the Giants' first-round pick in 2013, played in 34 games after making his major league debut in 2017. The 22-year-old has hit .300 over five years in the minors.
Span, who will turn 34 in spring training, batted .272 with 12 homers and 43 RBIs last season.
Krook, a left-hander, and the right-handed Woods played in High-A baseball last year.
