Top MLB Team Totals Odds & Picks for Wednesday, April 13 (2022)

Apr 13, 2022 - 2:27 PM

Twenty-six MLB teams take the field today, starting as early as 12:20 ET and running through 7:10 ET. There are several great pitching matchups on today’s slate, including Sean Manaea for the Padres taking on Logan Webb and the Giants. Out east, we have a battle of aces between Jose Berrios for the Blue Jays and Gerrit Cole for the Yankees. There’s no shortage of quality baseball today, so let’s dive into a trio of team totals that I’ll be betting today!

Our early slide on the MLB gambling front continued yesterday as we went 0-3 and moved to 5-12 overall on the season. A $100 bettor is down $589.71 (-5.90 units) so far. All three of our team totals lost by one run or less yesterday, so we’re on the right train of thought, just missing by a smidge. There’s plenty of time to turn things around this season, so here’s what I’m locking in for today:

Pittsburgh Pirates O/U 4.0 Total Runs

One of the earlier games on today’s MLB slate sees Kyle Hendricks go for the Cubs while the Pirates will opt for Zack Thompson to take the ball. First pitch is set for 12:35 ET at PNC Park in this one.

Kyle Hendricks pitched well and worked his way out of a couple of jams in his season debut against the Brewers on Thursday. He limited Milwaukee to one earned run on five hits while striking out seven batters over 5.1 innings.

Hendricks had two respectable outings against the Pirates at PNC park last season, allowing five runs over 11.0 innings of work. Against the current Pittsburgh roster, he’s limited them to a slash line of .153/.171/.268 over 95 at-bats. The Pirates are going to struggle offensively this season… and actually, they already have. They’re the second worst offense up to this point, scoring just 12 runs over four games. Look for Hendricks to have another quality outing today as he ramps up his pitch count and goes deeper into the game. Take the under on Pittsburgh’s run total today.

Bet: Pittsburgh Pirates Under 4 Total Runs (-124 via FanDuel)

Arizona Diamondbacks O/U 3.5 Total Runs

First pitch is set for 3:40 ET in Phoenix as the Arizona Diamondbacks gear up to host the Houston Astros. Framber Valdez looks to build off of a great season debut for the Astros while the Snakes send Merrill Kelly to the bump.

Framber Valdez, a 28-year-old left-hander, dazzled in his first outing of the season, throwing 6.2 innings of shutout baseball against the Angels last Thursday. Valdez allowed just two hits and a walk over the appearance while inducing 11 ground balls and striking out six hitters.

Valdez has never faced the Diamondbacks, so there is no head-to-head data to go off of in that regard. However, Arizona has struggled this season offensively, particularly against left-handed pitching. Overall, the Diamondbacks are the league’s second worst offense with just 12 runs through five games. They drop to the league’s worst team against LHP, posting a wOBA of just .131 and their BABIP is second worst at .143. Valdez should be able to dominate Arizona this afternoon and get a lot of ground ball outs and double play balls. I think Arizona struggles to score in this game, take the under on their team total.

Bet: Arizona Diamondbacks Under 3.5 Total Runs (+106 via FanDuel)

San Francisco Giants O/U 3.5 Total Runs

A huge part of why the Diamondbacks numbers against LHP are so low this season, is because of Sean Manaea. The Padres’ hurler made his first start of the season against Arizona last week and threw 7.0 innings of no-hit baseball against them. This will be his second start of the year while Logan Webb will make his second for San Francisco.

Sean Manaea overpowered the Diamondbacks last time out and he’ll be looking to build off of that start this afternoon. Manaea has a decent sample size against the Giants roster, facing them in 64 at-bats and limiting them to a .169/.266/.292 slash line and no home runs.

San Francisco has had some issues with left-handed pitching this season, posting a wOBA of .241 (25th) and BABIP of .269 (19th). This is a great pitching matchup between Manaea and Webb, so I expect Manaea to rise up and go toe-to-toe with the Giants’ ace. Look for a low scoring affair in the Bay today with the Giants scoring less than four runs.

Bet: San Francisco Giants Under 3.5 Total Runs (+104 via FanDuel)
