Top MLB No Runs First Inning (NRFI) Odds & Picks for Tuesday, May 17th (2022)

May 17, 2022 - 5:23 PM

We have a jam-packed Tuesday slate of MLB action with games throughout the afternoon and evening.  We went 3-0 in our top NRFI bets yesterday.  Let’s see if we can stay hot and hit a couple more today.

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Seattle Mariners

The Blue Jays host the Mariners on Tuesday evening in the second game of a three-game series.  Seattle will have Logan Gilbert on the hill – who has been one of the best starters in the game so far this season.  Gilbert owns a 2.13 ERA and a 4-1 record through his first seven starts in 2022.  Aside from his first start, Gilbert has yet to allow a run in the first inning this year.  Jose Berrios will get the ball for Toronto on Tuesday night.  Although he has struggled mightily over the first month and a half of this season (5.82 ERA), Berrios has only allowed a run in the first inning in two of his first seven starts.

Both Seattle and Toronto have had an underwhelming start at the plate thus far in 2022.  Seattle currently ranks 20th in MLB in runs scored per game (3.92), and Toronto ranks 22nd (3.78).  Seattle is averaging just 3.13 runs per game over its last eight, and the Blue Jays are putting up just 3.25 runs per game over their last eight.

I think there is plenty of value on this NRFI at -125.  You have two pitchers who have excelled in the first inning and one of them (Gilbert) has looked like a potential Cy Young contender.  Neither of these offenses has done a ton of damage to opposing pitchers this season, and they both have struggled even more as of late.  Toronto has to face Gilbert, and Seattle has only scored in the first inning in one of its last nine games.

Bet: NRFI (-125 at DraftKings)

Boston Red Sox vs. Houston Astros

The Red Sox host the Astros on Tuesday night in game two of a three-game set.  Boston will be happy to have Nathan Eovaldi on the mound for this one.  Eovaldi has a 3.15 ERA through his first seven 2022 starts and has not allowed more than three earned runs in any of them.  He has allowed no runs in the first inning in five of his seven starts.  Jose Urquidy will start the game on the bump for Houston.  Urquidy has a 3.66 ERA career ERA in 38 starts.  He has allowed just one earned run in his last ten innings pitched.

Both Boston and Houston are averaging less than 0.40 runs per game in the first inning this season – both ranking in MLB’s bottom nine.  Red Sox NRFIs are 12-1 in their last 13 games.  In Houston’s last ten games, it has scored in the first inning just once.  I am all over this NRFI at -115.  When these two teams have capable starters on the mound, I’ll keep taking the NRFIs until these teams start scoring in the first inning.

Bet: NRFI (-115 at DraftKings)
