Top MLB Betting Odds & Picks for Tuesday, May 24th (2022)

May 24, 2022 - 10:15 AM

It does not take a mathematical genius to realize that betting on the Cincinnati Reds’ moneyline odds everyday this season would be burning a hole in your pocket. However, many would be surprised to know what types of bets on what teams would be making them the most money. This is also an important exercise to periodically check back on, as oddsmakers will surely adjust the lines on the teams at the top of this list going forward.

Here are our best bets for Tuesday’s MLB action. (Odds courtesy of DraftKings)

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Atlanta Braves ML

Orioles Hall of Fame manager Earl Weaver famously once said, “Momentum is only as good as tomorrow’s starting pitcher.” That is a motto that the Braves should abide by entering tonight’s second game of their series with the Phillies after Philadelphia blew them out 7-3 yesterday.

Despite yesterday’s loss, Atlanta has had much success against Philadelphia in the last four seasons, winning 39 of the previous 59 meetings in Atlanta. The Phillies will look to take advantage of Max Fried (4-2, 3.31), who has had two consecutive subpar outings by his standards. Fried’s ERA has risen from 2.68 to 3.31 after allowing seven earned runs and 16 hits in his last 12 innings. He faces a Phillies lineup that entered yesterday 7-5 against left-handed starters, with a .335 wOBA (ranked fourth) and 115 wRC+ (ranked eighth) against southpaws. All they did in the series opener was rough up Braves lefty Tucker Davidson for five runs in 2.2 innings.

We have confidence that Kyle Gibson (3-2, 3.98) can lead his team to their fifth win in his last six starts. The only loss in that span was a 2-0 loss to San Diego, where the team failed to provide him any run support.

Bet: Philadelphia Phillies ML (+140 at DraftKings)

Cleveland Guardians vs. Houston Astros RL

While we are riding the momentum of a team coming off a dominating victory with our first pick, we are backing a team that looked lifeless in a surprising loss as big favorites in its series opener. The Astros’ bats were silent in yesterday’s 6-1 loss to Cleveland, but given how well they have played the last two weeks, we expect them to bounce back tonight.

Per MLB metrics, Houston entered last night’s series opener with a 2.09 ERA in May. To prove how dominant its pitching staff was compared to the rest of the league, the Angels ranked second-best with a 3.13 ERA. In addition, Houston’s offense had a league-best 134 wRC+, with St. Louis as second-best with 127.

Houston’s Framber Valdez (3-2, 2.68) has led his team to three straight victories and allowed two or fewer earned runs in four of his last five starts. Cleveland ranks 29th in the league with a .595 OPS against left-handed pitching, and we expect Valdez to turn in a brilliant start en route to a convincing Astros victory.

Bet: Houston Astros -1.5 Runs (-105 at DraftKings)

Milwaukee Brewers vs. San Diego Padres ML

Tonight’s Brewers-Padres pitching matchup is one of two former Cy Young Award winners, but only one pitcher looks in peak form at the moment.

Milwaukee’s Corbin Burnes (1-2, 2.26) entered yesterday ranked 12th in ERA, fourth in strikeouts (62), second in WHIP (0.83), and eighth in OBA (.190). His electric arm is a big reason the under is 6-0-2 in his last eight starts as a road favorite. With those numbers, Cy Young voters will not care if his record is below .500.

Conversely, San Diego’s Blake Snell (0-1, 7.36) is making his second start of the season after missing the first month and a half with a groin injury. Snell threw five or fewer innings in nine of his first 11 starts last season and was not a fast starter, pitching to a 4.99 ERA and winning just three of his first 16 starts before the All-Star Break.

The Brewers have a significant pitching edge tonight and are a great candidate to win their ninth game in the last 13 road games against the Padres.

Bet: Milwaukee Brewers ML (-135 at DraftKings)
