Miami Marlins vs. Philadelphia Phillies – 7:05 pm ET

In this battle of NL East foes, we get a pair of two excellent starters. Handling the top of the first will be one of the best pitchers in baseball, Zack Wheeler. Wheeler enters this start with a 2.69 ERA and 1.01 WHIP on the season. So it should come as no surprise that he’s also been spectacular in the first inning. Through 20 starts, he holds a 1.35 ERA, a 1.10 WHIP, and averages a strikeout per inning. Tonight, he gets a Marlins lineup that is 28th in first-inning scoring. On top of that, Miami has been cold at the dish of late as they have failed to score in the first in each of their last three games. So all signs point to Wheeler adding another tally to that streak.

As for the bottom of the first, that will be tasked to rookie left-hander Braxton Garrett. Garrett has quietly been a star in the Marlins’ excellent rotation. He holds a 3.88 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP upon entering this start. Garrett’s stuff has generated plenty of strikeouts, and he will need more as the first inning hasn’t been so kind to him. He has a 4.91 ERA and 1.55 WHIP through 11 starts this year, but he has racked up 15 strikeouts as well. The Phillies are no easy task in the first as they rank 17th in first-inning runs per game and 11th at home, but Garrett will have a significant matchup edge over their lead hitter Schwarber. This play will depend on if he can keep Hoskins and Bohm in the yard. Judging by his .78 home run per nine rate, I’m pretty confident that he will.
