Padres sign OF Jose Cruz Jr.

Dec 13, 2006 - 1:35 AM SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- The San Diego Padres on Tuesday agreed to terms with outfielder Jose Cruz Jr. on a one-year contract.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Cruz batted .233 with five home runs and 17 RBI in 86 games for the Los Angeles Dodgers last season before he was designated for assignment on August 1.

The 32-year-old switch-hitter is a .249 career hitter in 10 seasons with 198 homers and 602 RBI in 1,259 games for seven teams, including two stints with the Dodgers.

The Padres also announced on Tuesday that they did not tender a 2007 contract to outfielder Jon Knott, who now becomes a free agent.
