UFC Fight Night: Frankie Edgar vs. Pedro Munhoz Betting Guide (2020)

Aug 20, 2020 - 5:31 PM

Another week brings another card of great fights from the UFC, brought to you for free on ESPN and its family of networks. After last week’s largely average UFC 252, the company returns with a strong main card feature two light heavyweight fights as well as a very intriguing welterweight fight to kick off the evening.

To cap off the night, however, two top-ten ranked fighters will go at it in a fight that will have implications in the bantamweight division for years to come. Originally scheduled to be on Fight Island at UFC on ESPN: Kattar vs. Ige, the fight had to be postponed after Munhoz tested positive for COVID-19.

Let’s take a closer look at the main event of the evening to see where we can find some value in what is being perceived as a lopsided affair.

Making his debut with the company at UFC 67 in 2007, Frankie Edgar has become a legend of the sport in his decade-plus of fighting professionally. Since becoming the lightweight champion in 2010, Egar defended his belt three times before bouncing around between the featherweight division for much of the last decade.

The last time Edgar was was in the octagon was back in December, a first-round loss via TKO at the fists of Chan Sung Jung. The fight before that was a also a loss, that evening fighting for the featherweight belt against Max Holloway. Currently still ranked the number eight contender in that division, Edgar will make his bantamweight debut in this one against a killer, at that.

That killer, Pedro Munhoz, comes into this one in the dangerous position of being off of a loss. That loss came over a year ago at UFC 238, a unanimous decision against Alijmain Sterling in what was a back and forth fight that, in credit to Sterling, Munhoz could never quite get his delivery right in.

Prior to that evening, Munhoz was on a three-fight win streak, with his prior two fights coming in the first round via KO/TKO.

In this one, I see a fighter in Edgar who has done a tremendous amount for the sport, getting one final shot at proving he can still compete in what is an increasingly crowded bantamweight and featherweight divisions.

To put it simply, I don’t see that being the case. Munhoz is the future of the division, and I see this as just another stepping stone for him to take care of, in short order at that.

Pick: Pedro Munhoz by KO/TKO (+135)
