Dallas downs TWolves as Carlisle earns 400th coaching win

Dec 2, 2010 - 5:06 AM Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Shawn Marion scored 16 points to lead a balanced Dallas Mavericks offense in a 100-86 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves at American Airline Center.

J.J. Barea scored 14 and both Dirk Nowitzki and Caron Butler finished with 10 points for the Mavericks, who have won seven straight.

Tyson Chandler added nine points and a game-high 18 rebounds for Dallas, which gave head coach Rick Carlisle his 400th career victory, 119 of which have come with the Mavericks.

"(The low post) was the point of emphasis for the game." said Carlisle "Everybody was consciousness about keeping a body on their man, finding out where Love was on the floor. And I think he still had 15 rebounds. I think the decisive point of the game was that we did outrebound them and we didn't give them a lot of extra possessions, which is key."

Michael Beasley scored 16 points and Kevin Love added 12 points and 15 rebounds for the Timberwolves, who have dropped five straight.

Darko Milicic scored 12 and grabbed eight boards while Wayne Ellington added 13 points in defeat.

The Mavericks only made 36 percent of their shots in the first quarter, but went a perfect 8-of-8 from the line and 3-of-7 from beyond the arc to take a 29-20 lead after 12 minutes of play.

Barea scored nine points in the second as the Mavericks took a 55-43 lead into the locker room.

Chandler connected on two free throws at 8:14 of the third to extend the Mavericks lead to 16 at 63-47. Kevin Love then led a small Minnesota charge toward the end of the quarter, with his short hook-shot putting the game at 75-62.

But Dallas ended the quarter on an 8-2 run -- keyed by two Brian Cardinal three-pointers -- to extend its lead to 83-64 heading into the fourth.

Jason Terry, who finished with 12 points and seven assists, knocked down a three-pointer with 6:41 remaining to put Dallas up by 24 at 95-71, their largest lead of the game.

The Mavericks' lead remained above 20 until Beasley made two free throws at 2:17 to put the game at 98-79. Steve Novak then made a short jump-shot for Dallas to extend the lead to 21. The Timberwolves ended the game on a 7-0 run, including five points from Kosta Koufos, to account for the final margin.

"We turned the ball over way too much," said Timberwolves head coach Kurt Rambis. "When the game ,in the third quarter, got into the 10 point range our guys still had their heads down. That was a little bit of a disappointment."

This was the first of a Texas two-game tour for the Timberwolves, who will face the Spurs on Friday...The Timberwolves scored 40 of their points in the paint, while Dallas got 22...Both teams made 18-of-23 from the foul line...Haywood finished with seven points and 10 rebounds for the Mavericks.
