Howard, Magic beat Raptors by 40
Jan 22, 2011 - 6:46 AM Orlando, FL (Sports Network) - Dwight Howard dominated inside, posting 31 points and 19 rebounds as Orlando throttled Toronto, 112-72, at the Amway Center.Ryan Anderson supplied 21 points and 10 rebounds while J.J. Redick chipped in with 12 points for the Magic, who have won eight in a row on home hardwood.
"I just tried to be dominant on both ends," Howard said. "As a team we did a good job on the defensive end."
DeMar DeRozan scored 16 points for the Raptors, who also got 11 points apiece from Andrea Bargnani and Amir Johnson in losing a sixth straight game overall. They've also lost five in a row on the road.
"We couldn't keep Dwight off the glass, offensively or defensively," Toronto head coach Jay Triano said. "We're not a good rebounding team. It's a conscious effort to go get it and we don't have a lot of guys who have the distinct nose for it."
Orlando went on a 10-0 run to take a 20-12 lead with three minutes left in the first quarter. Howard had seven points and eight rebounds as the Magic forged a 26-18 advantage after the first 12 minutes.
A Jameer Nelson triple capped an 8-0 spurt that increased the Magic's lead to 40-29 with 4:16 left before the break. The lead grew to as many as 13 before the Raptors trimmed it to 47-41 at the intermission.
Howard's alley-oop dunk and a Jason Richardson triple pushed the margin to 61-46 with just over seven minutes left in the third quarter. The Raptors never got closer than 11 over the remainder of the period and went into the final stanza trailing 73-57.
Orlando opened the fourth quarter with an 18-2 burst to extend the lead to 32 and remove any doubt about the outcome over the final eight minutes.
Toronto mustered only 31 second half points while shooting 33.3 percent (14- for-42).
