Johnson goes for 37 as Hawks keep Raptors skidding

Feb 3, 2011 - 3:01 AM Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Joe Johnson scored a season-high 37 points and dished out eight assists, Josh Smith notched 18 points and 11 boards, and the Atlanta Hawks took care of the sliding Toronto Raptors, 100-87, at Philips Arena.

Maurice Evans and Al Horford both scored 12 points to help the Hawks bounce back from a 102-91 loss to Dallas on Saturday.

Horford also had 14 rebounds and seven assists for Atlanta, which swept the season series with Toronto (3-0) for the first time since the 1998-99 campaign.

The Raptors continue to struggle, losing their ninth straight road contest en route to a 13-game skid overall. Amir Johnson led the team with 20 points and 13 rebounds while DeMar DeRozan added 16 points.

"We just got to keep working," said Toronto head coach Jay Triano. "We need to not hang our heads and keep going...No one is feeling sorry for themselves. We just got to get a win under our belts. As far as effort, guys are working as hard as they can."

Jose Calderon scored 11 and had 10 assists in the loss.

Atlanta led 28-24 after the first quarter mostly due to Joe Johnson's 12 points in the period -- which included a three-pointer with time running out.

"It was fun out there tonight," Johnson said. "We pretty much dictated how the game was going to play."

Smith's steal and dunk with 7:16 left in the first half capped off a six-point run to put the Hawks up 38-30. The lead grew to nine, 54-45, at intermission.

Toronto started the third period with a 10-0 run and took a brief 55-54 lead after a Calderon reverse layup with nine minutes left. However, the Hawks took only a minute to score the next seven points to claim a 61-55 edge.

They held onto a 75-69 advantage heading into the final quarter.

Atlanta built its lead to 11, 82-71, with 10 minutes left when Johnson hit a trey -- he had 14 points during the final quarter. The Hawks would blow the game open, taking an 18-point lead with 4:11 to go, and the Raptors would never threaten the rest of the way.
