Augustin paces Bobcats over Raptors

Feb 23, 2011 - 4:20 AM Charlotte, NC (Sports Network) - D.J. Augustin posted 23 points and eight assists as Charlotte rolled over Toronto, 114-101, at Time Warner Cable Arena.

Gerald Wallace finished with 20 points while Boris Diaw scored 16 points and dished out nine assists for the Bobcats, who have won three of their last four.

Stephen Jackson, who had 13 points, left midway through the third quarter with a left hamstring strain. He did not return for precautionary reasons as the Bobcats are still battling for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot.

"We're trying to make the playoffs, " Diaw said. "We have no room for error. We really have to take care of business every game."

Sonny Weems scored 19 points to pace the Raptors, who finished a four-game homestand before the All-Star break with a 1-3 mark. Andrea Bargnani notched 18 points and eight rebounds while DeMar DeRozan poured in 14 points.

"We didn't really control the ball and that's what hurt us," Weems said. "We have to take better care of the ball."

Trailing 25-22, Charlotte finished out the first quarter on an 11-2 run to claim the lead for good. Augustin's layin started the burst and Nazr Mohammed's hook shot ended it with 6.9 seconds left to give the Bobcats a 33-27 edge.

The hosts continued to create separation in the second quarter when the lead was pushed to 11, 44-33, following Gerald Henderson's layup with seven minutes left. Charlotte's margin grew as much as 17 to finish out the half, 61-44, when Augustin hit a technical free throw with 19.9 seconds to go.

The Bobcats pushed ahead even more in the third quarter. Augustin's three early on made it a 21-point game, 68-47. The 20-point lead was maintained at the end of the quarter with the Bobcats comfortably ahead 89-69 with 12 minutes left to play.

Charlotte's bench played most of the final quarter as Toronto got within 11 points, but never really threatened.

Game Notes

The Raptors acquired forward James Johnson from the Chicago Bull just before the game for a 2011 first-round draft pick. The 6-foot-9, 245-pound forward was a first round selection by the Bulls in the 2009 NBA Draft. In 78 NBA appearances (11 starts), Johnson is averaging 3.8 points and 1.9 rebounds...Bargnani was 0-for-3 from beyond the arc to stay nine long balls shy of 500 for his career...Toronto turned the ball over 15 times, which converted into 19 Charlotte points.
