Warriors trip up Mavericks
Apr 3, 2011 - 7:16 AM Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - Monta Ellis had 32 points to lead Golden State to a 99-92 win over the Dallas Mavericks, snapping a six-game skid in the matchup.David Lee contributed 16 points, while Dorell Wright scored 13 for the Warriors, who gained their third straight home victory.
Dirk Nowitzki had an off night, going 5-of-16 from the field for 16 points for the Mavericks. Shawn Marion led the way with 21 points, while Jason Terry added 17, also off the bench, but the Mavs suffered back-to-back losses. Coming off a 28-point defeat to the Lakers, Dallas struggled to a 5-of-25 performance from beyond the arc against the Warriors.
Dallas still has a firm hold on the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference, three games ahead of Oklahoma City. They trail the Lakers by 2 1/2 games for second place.
The downfall for the Mavs was their 34 percent shooting in the second half. That included a 1-of-9 performance from Nowitzki.
Golden State trailed 50-48 at the half, but Ellis scored 18 during the pivotal third quarter. He scored the final 10 points during a 13-0 run that gave the Warriors the lead for good. The burst ended with Golden State holding a 68-57 cushion with 4:10 left in the period.
"I thought our fans, once again, gave us the juice and the energy to play. They came out and supported us big time, as always, and that's the first step," said Golden State head coach Keith Smart. "You gotta win at home first."
The Warriors held a 72-67 edge going to the fourth and pushed the margin to 12 points at 87-75 on a pair of Al Thornton free throws, combined with a technical foul shot from Stephen Curry with five minutes left.
Dallas rallied within 91-88 on a Marion dunk with 2 1/2 minutes left, but couldn't get over the hump. After two Nowitzki free throws made it a three- point margin again, Curry drove in the dagger, sinking a three-pointer for a 96-90 difference with 1:47 to go.
