Warriors beat Blazers; Curry sets record
Apr 18, 2013 - 7:04 AM Portland, OR (Sports Network) - Stephen Curry knocked down his second 3- pointer of the night with 6:49 left in the second quarter to pass Ray Allen for the most 3-point field goals in a season as the Golden State Warriors finished the regular season on a high note with a 99-88 win over the Portland Trail Blazers at Rose Garden.Curry began the game 1-for-7 before finding space on the right wing midway through the second stanza for his record-breaking triple. He finished the night with 15 points and five assists.
"It's special. I grew up watching Ray Allen shoot in shooting drills when he played with my dad in Milwaukee. I have an appreciation for how well he shot the ball in his career, and especially that one season," Curry said. "My teammates helped me along the way, setting screens and running our offense. It's a pretty special moment for everybody."
Klay Thompson paced the Warriors (47-35) with 24 points while David Lee registered his league-leading 56th double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Golden State has clinched the sixth seed in the Western Conference and will face the Denver Nuggets on Saturday in the opening round of the NBA playoffs.
LaMarcus Aldridge did everything he could for Portland (33-49), which concluded the campaign losers of 13 straight. Aldridge tallied 30 points and 21 boards and rookies Damian Lillard and Will Barton contributed 21 and 15 points, respectively. Barton logged 48 minutes.
"I'm disappointed in the season. I'm disappointed we lost tonight. I'm disappointed I couldn't play. I don't look at (the season as) rebuilding. I thought we had enough firepower to be playing on April 20," said Blazers guard Wesley Matthews who was sidelinded with an ankle injury.
Aldridge netted two quick baskets for the Blazers to put them up 4-2, but Thompson responded with a 3-pointer to give the Warriors an early lead, which they held for the duration of the game. Golden State led 24-17 after the opening stanza in which Aldridge scored 14 of the 17 points for the home team.
Golden State outrebounded Portland 17-9 in the second frame and got 10 bench points as it extended the lead to 50-36 at intermission.
Portland ended the third on a 9-2 run, capped by Sasha Pavlovic's 3-pointer with 2.9 left on the clock, to get back within three heading into the final 12 minutes.
The Warriors pulled away after Curry sparked a 17-4 surge midway through the fourth with two steals, both of which led to points.
Game Notes
Aldridge had eight field goals at halftime while the rest of Portland combined for just seven ... Curry finished the season with 272 3-pointers and shot a better percentage from 3-point range this season than he did on 2-pointers ... The Warriors' Harrison Barnes had eight points and 10 rebounds ... Golden State reserves outscored their counterparts, 30-20.
